Multi- Modal Medical Imaging & Custom Made Medical Devices

Multimodal imaging takes information collected from different imaging modalities that may not share the same piece of equipment, and presents them in a cohesive way via image processing techniques. Innovative ways to visualize, analyze, and characterise biological tissues and synthetic materials using multimodal medical imaging devices are emerging. This is a rapidly evolving field due to the constant upgrading and improvement of medical imaging and computational systems.

The ability to achieve millimeter or even sub-millimeter spatial resolution with the latest x-ray computer tomographs (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners has propelled non-invasive imaging into a new generation of advanced applications. Nuclear Medicine imaging, particularly positron emission tomography (PET), has dramatically progressed as well. Combining these imagining modalities with micron resolution optical scanning yields a step change in performance and treatment options.

Creating software models of the human anatomy and imaging systems, and modeling the medical physics of the imaging acquisition process can provide a means to generate realistic synthetic data sets. In many cases synthetic data sets can be used, reducing the time and cost of collecting real images, and making data sets available to institutions without clinical imaging systems.

These data are now being used for digital treatment planning and rapid manufacture of custom made medical devices, providing patient centred care and personalised health solutions. This in turn reduces operative time, patient trauma, and post-operative recovery time and associated cost, with improved outcome.
